Look closely and it’s a $1489.87 Apple MacBook you’ve supposedly purchased, of which $898.87 has already been “auto-debited” from your account. ![]() Not only that but Amazon doesn’t allow you to pay for some of a product and have it shipped while awaiting the remaining payment. What is problematic is that you didn’t place this darn order and that the format is completely wack. It’s pretty ugly, but as you’ll see, the official messages from Amazon are pretty poorly formatted too, so that’s not necessarily a warning sign. This is probably exactly what you received, even down to the same “order number”: Odds are there won’t be and you just avoided being scammed. It’s also smart if you get a notification from any institution to log in directly to that Web site (don’t click on a link, type in the company’s site address) and look to see if there’s a confirming message in your account. It’s all problematic and the very best way to protect yourself isn’t to pretend these messages aren’t making it into your inbox or voicemail, but to make it a habit to investigate and look for warning signs it isn’t legit. If we get a phone call from the local city government or the Internal Revenue Service saying they need to confirm our personal info, what do we do? Share that information with them. If we get an email from our bank saying something’s wrong and asking us to click on a link, what do we do? Click on that link. Why? Because we’re all too darn gullible and trusting. ![]() But more frustrating are scammers who have realized that they can send an email that makes it look like a receipt, warning, or even request for account confirmation and sucker people into responding without having hacked any accounts in the first place. It’s a fact of life in the modern world and it’s rather a frustrating situation. Even with Amazon and even from credit card accounts managed by smart, reputable banks. There’s no question that accounts get hacked and fraudulent transactions occur online. ![]()

Houston won the Conference Semifinals in 2008, the Conference Finals in 2009 and was runner-up for the MLS Cup in 2011. When the team began play in 2006, it hit the ground running, winning the MLS Championship in 20. In late 2005, the Anschutz Entertainment Group's talks for a soccer-specific stadium broke down, which resulted in the team's move to Houston, a city that was willing to build a venue for them. When I hit fn, fn, the audio from my internal speaker cuts out and text is transcribed after a second or two lag. It works perfectly to transcribe text to a TextEdit, Textwrangler or Word document, as long I select Quicktime source in AHJ, click the “Hijack” button, play a QT movie that is on my desktop and immediately click on the TextEdit, Textwrangler or Word window and hit fn, fn. I’ve set up the system to turn audio hijacked by AHJ into dictation which is transcribed to text via Maverick’s Advanced Dictation feature. The following screencast illustrates this process from start to finish:ĭo you have your own solution for this that you’ve been using? Please comment below and share what you’ve learned. In other words, it becomes an integral part of your sound system in MacOS X.įinally, we set the Dictation input to be Soundflower as follows:Īt this point, any audio played by QuickTime Player X will be routed to Soundflower and will thus become available to any application that accepts text input and has a Start Dictation menu item. Once installed, Soundflower becomes an input/output option in your Sound preference pane and everywhere else audio sources and destinations can be specified. The Auxiliary Device Output plug-in enables us to choose the previously installed Soundflower as the recipient of the HiJacked audio as follows: To do that we go to the Effects tab and choose Auxiliary Device Output from the 4FX menu. Next, we use Audio HiJack Pro to send that audio to Soundflower (free). This configuration will grab all the audio from QuickTime Player X as it plays the “NPR Gettsyberg Address” audio file. My sample audio is from NPR and contains a dramatic reading from noted actor, Sam Waterston and looks like this in QuickTime Player X: This will capture the audio from anything that this app plays. Thus, I set that app as the audio source as follows: It could be any app that emits audio but I used QuickTime Player X. ![]() The first is to identify the source of the audio. There are two things to set up with this app. The application at the center of this process is Audio HiJack Pro by Rogue Amoeba ($32 USD). It isn’t intuitive or Apple-easy but it is something that anyone can accomplish with a bit of determination. You can, in fact, route the speech in an audio file through Apple’s speech-to-text subsystem and render very usable text output. There is no obviously easy way to route speech from a recorded file through Apple’s Dictation system to produce usable text. ![]() Still, this is a system that assumes a live speaker. However, Dictation was given a significant boost in MacOS X 10.9 (Mavericks) with the introduction of Enhanced Dictation which enables offline use and continuous dictation with live feedback. This created delays and was difficult to use for substantial bodies of text. However, the first iteration of this system required an internet connection so that speech could be uploaded to Apple’s servers where it would be turned into text. This is quite an advance over having to purchase a two hundred dollar application to accomplish the same end. MacOS X recently introduced Dictation (speech-to-text) as a feature usable in any application that takes text as input. Speech to text (STT) is a bit more difficult than text to speech (TTS) which has been in use much longer. Indeed, many important videos are created in ad hoc fashion (interviews, panel discussions, conference presentations and the like) where scripts would be totally inappropriate.Ĭreating text from speech has become essential to meeting these expectations, especially where all one has to work with is the speech in the audio track of a video. The problem is that many videos are created without a script that is followed closely by the speakers in that video. For video content creators, this means providing a transcript or, better, providing subtitles to that video so that dialogue may be viewed in the same context as the video. One important aspect of that challenge is to make video more accessible to persons who are deaf or have difficulty hearing. The pressure is on to to make screencasts and other online video more accessible. This can be extremely handy for anyone that needs to create captions for a video, but lacks the transcribed text. Lowney describes how to use the Enhanced Dictation feature in MacOS X 10.9 (Mavericks), combined with Audio Hijack and Soundflower to turn recorded audio into a text file. If you’re interested in captioning your videos, you’ll find this interesting. Ghost Protocol was the installment in which the transition occurred, and remains the best fusion of both approaches. In the beginning, however, it was an extension of Cruise’s desire to work with visionary directors, from Brian De Palma to John Woo, and allow them to put their own distinctive spins (or doves) on the material. Nowadays, the Mission: Impossible series is best known as the franchise in which Tom Cruise risks his life trying some crazy stunt for the sake of an Imax screen. Whatever its merits (or demerits) the film did one thing right: it introduced Cruise to writer Christopher McQuarrie who would go on to direct Cruise in 2012’s Jack Reacher and then shepherd the M:I series starting with 2015’s Rogue Nation. However, the film is a meticulously plotted retelling of a fascinating chapter in the history of World War II. Cruise, attempting a measured twist on his all-American persona by playing a Nazi who nevertheless wants to kill Hitler, doesn’t always look comfortable in his eyepatch and questionable German accent. Cruise plays real-life German Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who led an assassination attempt on Adolph Hitler in 1944. The worst of the four was 2007’s boring PoliSci lecture Lions For Lambs and if you remove the failed franchise starter Knight And Day, and his glorified cameo in the hilarious Tropic Thunder, you’re really left with 2008’s Valkyrie as the best of the bunch. One of the defining movies of the 1980s, Risky Business remains a touching coming-of-age story and a trenchant satire of Reagan-era values.Cruise released four movies between Mission: Impossible 3 and Ghost Protocol and they show his career listing a bit while he attempts escape velocity on the rocket ship of M:I sequels. Written and directed by Paul Brickman, Risky Business is a thoughtful movie about the treacherous transition into adulthood and a scathing critique of the amorality of capitalism. His solution? Turn the house into a brothel with the help of a sex worker (Rebecca De Mornay)!īeyond it’s setup, Risky Business has little in common with the the cheap party flicks and shallow teen sex comedies that deluged 1980s cinema. Make no mistake, shenanigans will ensue as Joel has to figure out how to earn enough money to pay for the damage he causes (he drives his father’s Porsche into Lake Michigan, among other things), while also getting himself through a Princeton entrance interview. ![]() It’s not always easy to pinpoint the exact moment an actor becomes a star, but with Cruise it was obviously the moment he slid across the floor in his skivvies and a pair of Ray Ban Wayfarers while lip synching to Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll” in Risky Business.Ĭruise plays Joel, a high school senior who is thrilled to have the house to himself while his parents are away. To put that fanciful figure into its rightful context, consider that jitter here is as low as ☒0 μs (microseconds) and that one microsecond is to one second as one second is to 11.574 days! Do the math. Synchronising multiclock to a master DAW relies on a sample-accurate audio clock stream, which, in turn, guarantees gloriously-tight clock signals to within ☑ sample of jitter - jitter being defined as the undesired deviation of a periodic signal from the ideal timing. The key to multiclock’s reliability and innovation is its ability to acquire a variety of sync signals from an Audio Sync track, as opposed to relying on a MIDI Clock signal. Doing this is easier said than done from a technical standpoint, so how has E-RM Erfindungsbüro apparently achieved the impossible with something so small and simple to use, then? ![]() Put simply, it is built to overcome all of the well-documented problems associated with achieving tight synchronisation of sequencers, drum machines, arpeggiators, and other external equipment with each other and also within the workflow of a DAW. Unfortunately it can be a little tricky to understand if you're not familiar with problem solving these kinds of issues not helped by unhelpful support and an OKAY manual (there are worse out there to be fair) and that's usually the point where most people who've hit a brick wall, give up and sell it.Multiclock’s ‘mission impossible’ is to therefore act as a one-stop shop for creatively synchronising all kinds of musical equipment to a master DAW with the greatest of ease and, obviously, precision. The only thing I've found that does, is the ERM Multiclock. In my case I have various different drum machines and synths all with their own interpretations of the sync clock. If you have multiple, you start running into problems and that's when a Multiclock comes to the rescue. If you have one or two devices, sure Ableton's sync solutions can help. Then, you’ll go to create a new virtual machine, the same as you’ve done before via “File>New”: You can use 32-bit or 64-bit, but we’ve heard that lots of folks are getting better performance out of 64-bit, so this example will assume that. ![]() Next, What You Care Aboutīecause VMware Fusion does not yet support Windows 7, there are some tweaks you’ll have to do.įirst, go ahead and download the Windows 7 ISO from Microsoft’s Windows 7 Beta site and get yourself a beta product key. So, we wanted to take the opportunity to show you that Windows 7, like Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 98, and pretty much any other Intel-based OS (Linux too!) will run in a VM with VMware Fusion, and give some guidance on how to set things up for best success. The Macs are twice as fast, and the software’s much more mature. Also, this isn’t Mac virtualization of the sort you may have seen in early 2007. This is virtualization, with direct CPU access, and all the speed that entails. ![]() This isn’t Virtual PC for Mac, which emulated the Intel chip in software. Not just that, but Windows on the Mac nowadays isn’t your father’s Windows on Mac. The list goes on and on, but you get the point. This kind of old-school thinking is a bit of a bummer, as there are tens of thousands of great Windows-only applications that Mac users can’t access without virtualized Windows apps, like Microsoft’s Photosynth on Mac, Worldwide Telescope on Mac, or Microsoft’s new Songsmith on the Mac, not to mention things like Google Chrome on Mac. Instead, you get people sitting back and saying “Windows on Mac? Ew!” because they haven’t really had the opportunity to learn any better. And unlike VMware Fusion, which has a fully-functional 30-day trial for anyone to play with, Microsoft doesn’t typically provide trial access to operating systems in a way conducive to playing around in a VMware virtual machine-like an OS disk image, for example.Īs such, a lot of Mac users who aren’t recent switchers, haven’t taken the opportunity to play around with the idea of Windows on the Mac, and as a result haven’t seen how fast, stable, and easy it can be. One of the costs associated with running Windows on the Mac is the cost of Windows. Anyone can go and download the Windows 7 bits, and get a beta serial key that’s good through July 1st, 2009.
